Ireland has a rich storytelling heritage. The storytelling scene in Ireland is no less rich and diverse today than it was in the past. We hope Milk and Cookies has inspired you to find out more about what Irish storytelling has to offer. With this in mind, we would like to draw your attention to our favourite storytelling groups and events.
Who are they?
Yarnspinners Dublin: Grab a cosy armchair in the Teacher’s club and listen to an array of tales, tall and otherwise, from members of the Storytellers of Ireland.
Join their facebook group.
The Narrative Arts Club: Run by Adam Wilson and Coilín “The Oh-Assieux”, two adventurous performers whose repertoire stretches from the Tuatha Dé Danann to the Arabian Nights. Monthly shows in the Library Bar Extension, Central Hotel, Exchequer St.
See their website for their next show or join their facebook group.
Storytelling at the Coop: “Once upon a time there were a bunch of lovely people gathered to listen to stories… Around them were many organic fruits and vegetables… This is not a fairytale! It is really happening in the Dublin Food Co-op!!”
Get your fruit and veg, and listen to some of Ireland, America and France’s finest storytellers (Nina Tanis, Fiona Dowling, Eleonore Nicholas, Adam Wilson, and Michael Phelan) in the bargain! The first Thursday of every month in the Dublin Food Co-op, New Market, Off Cork Street, by St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Free entry, though donations are welcome!
Not Also But Only: Comic storytelling from Shane Langan (of Diet of Worms and Puffincat fame) and all his weird and wonderful friends. A place for comedians and storytellers to try things they wouldn’t normally get the chance to do! Monthly in the plush upstairs of 4 Dame Lane.
Do visit their facebook page.
!!STORY STORY!!! Story Night calls you out into the wild dark night to come and listen, come and tell or just come and eat cake! With that winning combination of home-baking and stories, the Galway Story Night is an event after Milk and Cookies own heart! It occurs on the first Tuesday of every month, at 8pm in the Blue Teapot Theatre Company on Munster Avenue in Galway. They request a small 3 euro donation to cover the costs of baking and venue hire.
The event is run by Clare Murphy, one of the most fun, skilled and dynamic storytellers in Ireland. Contact Clare to find out more.
